Presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee will meet leaders of Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) at a hotel, after addressing the Congress MPs and state legislators here in the city on July 1, 2012.

Pranab Mukerjee like the MIM have been mute on the Telangana issue. It was also not clear if Mukherjee would call on Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N. Chandrababu Naidu to seek his party's support. TDP, TRS and YSRCP have not yet announced their stand on the presidential polls.

Mukherjee is very well respected within the party social circles. Other media accounts describe him as having "a reputation as a number-crunching politician with a phenomenal memory and an unerring survival instinct."

After Sonia Gandhi reluctantly agreed to join politics, Mukherjee was one of her key mentors, guiding her through difficult situations with examples of how her mother-in-law, Indira Gandhi would have done things. Mukherjee's unfailing loyalty and competence have led to his closeness to Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh, and helped him gain the position of Minister of Defense when the party came to power in 2004.

He has also held the position of Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission from 1991 to 1996.

Mr Mukherjee is not without his ghosts in the closet.  A soon-to-be-published book claims that finance minister and UPA's presidential nominee Pranab Mukherjee was engaged in an elaborate "cover-up" on the last days of Azad Hind Fauj founder and national leader Subhas Chandra Bose.

Penned by former journalist Anuj Dhar, the book that is likely to hit the stands in July, dismisses the official version that Bose died in an air-crash in Taiwan in 1945. The book, India's Biggest Cover-Up, is based on records declassified by the US, British and Indian authorities and several documents that continue to be kept secret over 65 years after the incident.
